For most people, January 1st is when they think about change — new goals, new routines, fresh starts. But if you’re a parent, you know the real “reset” button is September. Kids go back to school, the calendar shifts, and the lazy, unstructured days of summer are gone. This is when you reevaluate how your time is spent, what’s working, and what needs to change. In other words, this is the real new year.
Life in September has a different energy. The days start cooler, the evenings come earlier, and your schedule has more rhythm. Psychologists have even documented something called the “fresh start effect” — the tendency for people to take action toward goals after meaningful time markers like birthdays, holidays, or seasonal changes (Dai, Milkman & Riis, 2014). Fall is one of those natural turning points, making it the perfect time to start (or restart) your health habits.
Before you set new goals, you need to take inventory of your current reality. This is what I call a “Fall Audit.” Ask yourself: Where is my time going? Which commitments are energizing me, and which are draining me? How is my health right now — energy, strength, mood? Research from the American Psychological Association shows that parents who actively assess and adjust their routines report higher life satisfaction and lower stress (APA, 2020). If you’ve been running on autopilot, now is the time to course-correct.
When school starts, the first thing many parents sacrifice is their own self-care — especially workouts, meal prep, and downtime. The problem is, these are the exact things that give you the energy and mental clarity to handle a busy schedule. Skipping them doesn’t save time; it drains the quality of your time. Studies published in the Journal of Occupational Health Psychology show that adults who maintain regular physical activity during high-stress periods report better focus, more energy, and improved mood (Puig-Ribera et al., 2015).
If you’ve ever told yourself, “I’ll start fresh in the new year,” you already know how that story usually ends. Between now and January are the busiest, most tempting months of the year — holidays, events, travel, comfort food. If you can’t make your habits work during real life, they won’t magically stick after a holiday binge. Instead, use the momentum of the fall routine to put your systems in place now. That way, when the holidays hit, you’re not starting from scratch — you’re simply adjusting an already working plan.
Fall isn’t about doing more. It’s about doing the right things, consistently. That means scheduling workouts in your calendar like appointments, building a short list of healthy meals you can make on autopilot, and setting realistic sleep and downtime goals. Your kids don’t need a burnt-out version of you — they need the healthiest, strongest version. And that starts with how you lead yourself.
