If you’ve stepped outside in North Carolina lately, you already know… it is HOT. ☀️🥵
And if you’re exercising, walking, running, working outside, or just trying to stay active this summer, hydration needs to be a bigger part of the conversation.
We talk a lot about protein, calories, workouts, and getting our steps in, but hydration can easily get overlooked.
When you’re sweating more, your body is losing more fluid. And even mild dehydration can leave you feeling tired, sluggish, headachy, and make your workouts feel harder than they normally would.
So how much should you be drinking?
There isn’t one perfect number for everyone. Your needs depend on your body size, activity level, how much you sweat, and how much time you spend outside.
A good place to start is simply paying attention:
Drink consistently throughout the day instead of trying to catch up at night.
Bring water with you when you exercise.
Increase your fluids when you’re sweating more than usual.
Pay attention to your urine color. Pale yellow is generally a good sign that you’re well hydrated.
If you’re doing longer, harder workouts or sweating heavily in the heat, electrolytes may be helpful too.
And remember: hydration is part of nutrition.
Your nutrition doesn’t have to be perfect to make progress. But the basics matter....eating enough protein, fueling your workouts, drinking enough water, getting movement in, sleeping well, and doing those things consistently.
That last word is usually the hardest part: consistency.
Most of us know we should drink more water. We know we should exercise. We know we probably need more protein and fewer meals grabbed on the fly.
Knowing and consistently doing are two very different things.
That’s where having a nutrition coach can make such a difference.
A coach isn’t there to expect perfection or hand you another restrictive diet. A good coach helps you create realistic habits that work with your actual life and then provides the accountability to keep working on them when life gets busy.
Sometimes knowing that someone is going to check in with you is exactly what you need to fill up that water bottle, get your workout in, prep a few meals, or make the better choice you’ve been meaning to make.
This summer, don’t make your goal perfection.
Stay hydrated. Keep moving. Fuel your body. And focus on being consistent more often than not.
And if you know you need a little more structure and accountability with your nutrition, that’s exactly what we’re here for.
Stay cool and keep that water bottle close! 💦
