Net Carbs vs Total Carbs

Net Carbs vs Total Carbs

November 14, 20232 min read

What’s the difference and why should you care?

First off, carbs have been demonized for far too long. With the Ketogenic Diet being the latest fad to make waves across the industry and the general public, #carbs have been demonized even further than they were when the Adkins Diet hit the scene.

If that wasn’t enough, you may have read that if you aren’t also fasting for 16 hours per day, you won’t live as long.

Have you ever wondered why it seems you need to go to an extreme to get the results you might be after?

Well, at #BFP we’ve been in the #fitness and #nutrition industry for a long time and we’ve wondered the exact same thing.

In fact, social proof and quite a bit of research would prove that going to extremes, in most cases, leads to most folks ending right back where they started if not worse.

So, let’s examine one piece of the puzzle and instead of demonizing or removing carbs from our diet entirely, let’s learn more about them.

Total Carbs – Fiber = Net Carbs

Most whole or naturally occurring fruits, veggies, and grains tend to be good sources of fiber. This makes them naturally lower in carbohydrates since we do not absorb most of the fiber (which is a carb).

There’s no denying the numerous benefits of fiber.

This is also one reason why diets consisting primarily of whole foods tend to be lower in calories than diets consisting of more processed and altered foods.

Quite possibly the same reason that a diet with high levels of 100% fruit juice lead to increase in belly fat as well as an increase for Type 2 Diabetes and a diet high in whole fruits did not.

Carbs aren’t bad. Over consumption of carbs or most any food for that matter on a regular basis is.

Hopefully we helped you learn that losing weight can be simpler than you think and that extremes aren’t necessary for most.

Now, the question is, can you apply what you learned about net carbs to other foods like pasta? You might be surprised! Take a picture of the first nutrition label you checked after this and post it in the comments below!
