We Always Have Just Enough Time..

We always have just enough time

“I really want to make this happen, but I just don’t have enough time,”

-said a successful person – never!

And yet, it is an ‘excuse’ we see in the lives of busy people. Yes, an excuse. Reality is, if we really want something there’s always a way. The key is being sure we are clear about what we want before our time is used up by the things other people really want, wandering in our OWN lives.

The opposite of prioritizing is wandering.

‘Wandering' leads to

burnout and exhaustion!

So, how do we stop wandering? When used with purpose, our calendar reflects what we really want to accomplish. It’s where we decide what and when to give time to, to make things happen. If we don't approach our calendar with intentional decision making, it might not be a true reflection of our priorities. Knowing our priorities empowers us to say YES to the best things and no to all the rest.

When we wander, we feel good when we say yes to something someone asks of us, until our days are so overloaded with ‘stuff’ we run out of time to do the things that actually bring us purpose and joy that refuels us.

Stop the Wandering - A Simple Process

When we truly want to stop wandering and start getting results on purpose, it can be as simple as setting up a weekly process.

Start each day and/or week by prioritizing the most important things you want to accomplish.

  • What do you need to do this week to reach a goal

  • What goals are most important to you at this time?

  • As you begin to fill in and/or evaluate your calendar, ask some questions that will keep you focused on the priority path and off the wandering paths. Questions like…

  • Is this something that I can/want/need to do right now to move me forward toward a goal?

  • How important is it that I make this happen this day/week?

  • If I don’t do this now, will I miss a valuable opportunity?

  • Can this wait a day/week and still be a valuable opportunity later?

  • Is this something that can or should be done by someone else?

  • Did I say yes to this out of guilt but it can and should be given back to the original owner?

There are a lot of questions you can ask yourself to evaluate the best use of your time, but the best one of all is this…

  • By saying yes to this time commitment, am I saying no to one or all of my priority purposes?

At the end of the day, there is always enough time. Choose your YES with purpose.

Exercise for you to do RIGHT NOW…

The first step before making any change in our lives is awareness

  • For your exercise today, take a look at your calendar and give it a ‘priority’ evaluation on a scale of 1-5, 1 being very low in priority and 5 being of the utmost importance.

This will help you bring awareness to what you say ‘yes’ to and how it aligns with your priorities.
